SAM Magazine—March 27, 2020—Gregg Blanchard of slopefillers.com surveyed resort marketers to gauge the state of marketing amid the COVID-19 pandemic. About 70 respondents shared where they were in terms of financial impact, season pass sales, marketing budget, and more. Plus, many shared their sentiments in written responses. At the time, two of the respondents worked at resorts that were still open.
Blanchard concludes the interpretation of the results with this:
“I think the best summary was this simple, four-word response: ‘It’s bigger than skiing.’
“And therein lies the dilemma. It is bigger than skiing, but selling skiing is our job. Sit on your hands too long, and there won’t be a chair left for you to sit on.
“It’s a delicate balance, but I’ve been extremely impressed with what I’ve seen thus far, and I don’t see that changing.”
